Rugby in Sweden and Europe

Som helhet var SM-sjumanna i Linköping en klar succé. Arrangemanget var utmärkt, spelplanen, domarna, kommentatorn även prisutdelningen var också bra. Vad var det då som inte fungerade bra? Jo, den totala inkompetens som Rugbyförbundet redovisade under flera veckor avseende frågor av central betydelse. Här några exempel:

Exiles insåg tidigt att den nya Superserien skulle vara krävande och de meddelade SRF att de inte skulle delta i SM-sjumanna om det innebar att de fick spela flera omgångar för att få ned antalet deltagande lag från 9-10 till 8. Generalsekreteraren svarade att det var ett krav från Riksidrottsförbundet (RIF) att inte fler än 8 lag fick delta under SM-veckan. Exiles skrev till RIF och fastställde att detta var nonsens. Till sist blev det en direktfinal med nio lag på såväl dam- som herrsidan. Schemat ändrades så många gånger att Exiles i onödan fick beställa en extra hotellnatt för 32 personer, kostnad c:a 15.000:-. Spelschemat till sist blev horribelt med spelperioden ibland upp till 7 timmar för tre matcher. Viloperioderna varierade oerhört till gagn/förfång för olika lag och med risk för spelarnas hälsa och välbefinnande. Exiles fick t ex 35” mellan semifinal och final. De spelade fyra matcher före finalen och Enköping fem; det var rätt uppenbart att Enköpingsspelarna var slutkörda innan de kom in på finalspelplan.

SRF har en arvoderad generalsekreterare som inte kan skriva formellt riktig svenska. Därför har de också en (icke-arvoderad ?) sekreterare som kan skriva svenska. Hans förmåga att tolka skrivna regler kan emellertid diskuteras. Han har retat gallfeber på Exiles och andra klubbar m a p hans benägenhet att göra orimliga tolkningar av relativt entydiga klausuler. Det skall vara fritt fram för besökande studenter att spela rugby i Sverige. Men hans märkliga tolkning av reglerna innebar att 4-5 stycken inte fick spela en enda match i Sverige i år.

Specifikt när det gäller sjumanna tolkade han reglerna om farmarlag på så sätt att Troján och Kalmar Södra diskades. Troján blev upprörda, klagade på beslutet hos RIF och, icke oväntat, vann. Därav det faktum att de fick mindre än 24 timmar på sig att plocka ihop ett damlag med ytterligare åtföljande schemaändringar. Det kan inte fortsätta på det här sättet.

Låt oss nu vända oss till ett betydligt trevligare ämne, rugbyn. Jag börjar med damerna som jag tycker gjorde bra ifrån sig trots att nästan ingen av våra utländska landslagsspelare var på plats. Det var nog rätt klart att tre lag var ett strå vassare än det övriga: Pingvin, Vänersborg och Göteborg. Exiles, Trojan och Enköping låg en bit efter medan Hammarby, Södertälje och Malmö var nog svagast. Det var doch trevligt att se hur Hammarby och Södertälje hade gjort vissa framsteg. Enköping var i en tuffare grupp och klarade inte semi medan Exiles och Troján delade på andra plats i andra gruppen. Det blev till sist Troján som gick till semi tillsamman med de tre främsta, men där blev det stopp mot Göteborg. På Dag 1 såg det ut som om förra årets mästare, Pingvin, skulle blåsa igenom hela turneringen. De släppte inte igenom en enda poäng och verkade som om de hade minst tre spelare som var snabbare än alla andra. Men de gick bet på de mogna damerna från Vänersborg. Pingvin ledde 17 – 12 då två minuter återstod men motståndarna kämpade tillbaka gjorde försök och slog in sparken för att vinna 19 – 17. En mycket fin seger.

Göteborg klarade av Troján utan problem och då blev det final mot Vänersborg. En mycket tät match där landslagets Maja Meuller gav Vänersborg en 10 – 0 ledning före halvtid. Men Göteborg reducerade till 10 – 5 direkt efteråt och deras spelare insåg att de var minuter ifrån en oväntad titel. Med snart 50-åriga Dr ”Ullis” Hall i spetsen bombarderades Vänersborgs linje och vid minst fyra tillfällen var de centimeter ifrån. Men Vänersborg höll ut efter en heroisk insats och säkrade mästerskapet. En bra avslutning på en spännande turnering.

På herrsidan var det nog också tre grupper om tre. Först hade vi de tre superlagen Exiles, Troján och Enköping. Sedan hade vi de tre bästa Allsvenska lagen Spartacus, Göteborg och Erikslund och till sist hade vi blåbären Hammarby, Malmö och Vänersborg. Erikslund skrämde ett nonchalant Exiles och förlorade endast 10 – 15, men maktställningen återställdes då Exiles slog Spartacus och Hammarby med 41 – 0 resp. 51 – 0 för att vinna gruppen. Erikslund slocknade efter matchen mot Exiles, förlorade mot Spartacus och gick miste om en semifinalplats.

I andra gruppen vann Enköping relativt övertygande mot Troján som i sin tur slog Göteborg.

Det blev således Exiles som ställdes mot Troján medan Enköping tog emot Spartacus. Enköping vann lätt mot Spartacus och Exiles gick upp till en 19 – 5 ledning efter 11 minuter men en ny slarvig period gav Troján 17 – 19. Exiles samlade sig och gjorde nytt försök på 30 sekunder för att vinna 26 – 17. Sedan blev det den väntade finalen mellan Enköping och Exiles. Stockholmslaget var taggat från början, gav inte Enköping något större utrymme och vann 26 – 12. Efter skrämseln mot Erikslund i första matchen vann Exiles sina fyra matcher med 24 – 4 i försök och var aldrig hotade. En eloge till Merti Bast som gjorde 8 försök efter en dominerande insats. Troján och Enköping var svagare än förra året, Enköping verkade som sagt vara slutkörda i finalen och Exiles var i en klass för sig. Nu en omgång av den tuffa Superserien innan alla kan få en välbehövlig semester.               

Jag började skriva denna blogg efter första omgången och då var min rubrik: ”Sjumannalagen en besvikelse”. Lyckligtvis väntade jag tills andra omgången var avslutad och då var min syn mera positiv, speciellt när det gäller damerna. Min tidiga negativa syn på damerna grundade sig på att de inte hade en riktig sprinter i laget; gång på gång hann de inte i kapp motståndarna som sprang ifrån när de skapade en lucka och samma motståndare hade inga problem att fånga in svenskorna när de bröt igenom. Våra damers uppbackning och off-loading var också svaga, de sprang ideligen rakt in i motståndarna, hamnade på marken och överlämnade oftast bollen. Svagt motstånd gav Sverige en enkel passage till semifinalen mot Portugal som avgjordes på slutet. Ena bristen var mest påfallande i matchen där Sverige spelade bra men låg under med 5 – 0. Två minuter kvar, Sverige bröt igenom och hade ett ohotat försprång på minst 5 meter. Försvaret hann dock i kapp bollbäraren innan hon nådde 22 m.-linjen och en minut senare i en liknande situationen kunde en portugisiska med lätthet springa ifrån och skapa en 10 – 0 seger.

Tjejerna hade lärt sin läxa till omgång 2 och visade upp ett klart bättre lag. Sprinters kan man inte trolla fram på en vecka men våra stora starka flickor som Minonna kunde springa hårt med besked, utföra tuffa tacklingar och inte minst backa upp bollbärarna. I motsvarande match om tredje plats omgång 2 kunde svenskorna köra över portugiserna och knipa en bronsmedalj. Med 30 poäng från de två omgångarna, lika många som Portugal, blev Sverige placerade fyra som helhet. Varför de missade en (delad) bronsmedalj förblir Rugby Europes lilla hemlighet, tillsammans med en stor samling obegripligheter som de gjort sig skyldiga till under årens lopp. Det gav emellertid två belöningar: en uppflyttning till Championshipnivå nästa år och en plats bland de 12 Europeiska länder som i juli slåss om fyra platser till sjumanna-VM i Cape Town den 9/11 september. Det senare kan nog bli en bro för mycket, men spelar de som de nu visat att de kan, kommer de inte att göra bort sig i Bucharest den 16/17 juli. En eloge till Sveriges lagkapten, Victoria Petersson, som jag tycker var genomgående bäst på plan.

Min ursprungliga besvikelse över herrlaget var dels vilka som hade tagits ut och hemlighetsmakeriet kring förberedelserna. Jag anser fortfarande att 4/5 av de uttagna inte var tillräckligt bra på denna nivå och det framgick tydligast av försvarsspelet där vi ideligen lämnade stora luckor mot rätt så enkla anfall. Det var också tråkigt att konstatera att många av dem som hade överlevt vårt lysande lag från mitten på tiotalet kanske spelade sin sista turnering. ”There´s no sense fighting time” som Don McLean sjunger någonstans och tyvärr börjar det blir dags för en förnyelse. Ett lysande undantag var den 37-åriga Matt Mitchell som inte fick så mycket speltid under första omgången men som startade varje match och stannade länge under omgång 2. Han visade sig vara Sveriges bäste spelare både i anfall och försvar och är fortfarande med hästlängder Sveriges bäste klunghalva. Familjen Melander delade på gracerna under de två dagarna. Alex började bra som vanligt men verkar lite bräcklig och spelade mindre på slutet. Brodern Dennis som fick mycket mera speltid dag 2 sprang ifrån alla som ytter och stod för minst 5 försök. Han lär ha ägnat sig mest åt sprintträning i våras och det märktes. Axel Kalling-Smith verkar ha lagt till lite muskel, vilket gör han ännu mera svårstoppad. Synd att han spelade mest i klungan men det var främst där Sverige hade sina brister.

Sverige spelade dock bättre under omgång 2 och skapade många bra försök. En snöplig förlust i sista matchen mot Croatien gav de bara en sjätte plats totalt, ett steg bättre än i omgång 1. När de stora länderna är borta nästa år bör vi satsa reellt på en uppflyttning.

nför helgen fick jag skriva min blogg innan laguppställningarna hade redovisats. Dessa var av förklarliga skäl något försenade då samtliga lag var osäkra om vilka spelare som var i stånd att ställa upp. På fredag fick vi äntligen besked och bilden verkade vara ännu värre än vi hade anat.

Exiles fick byta ut sex redan kända skadade och lyckligtvis blev det inga fler. De har bra ersättare för alla och fortfarande en stark bänk. Men man kan inte förlora så många bra spelare utan att spelstyrkan något försämras.

För motståndarna, Troján, är situationen klart sämre. Vi trodde att Sami Paulsson och de två halvbackarna skulle vara borta; som nödlösning dyker dock Sami upp som uthalv. Men Troján är dessutom utan Jonas Zendler och Alex Melander deras bäste forward resp. back hittills under säsongen. Mycket har fått stuvas om i klungan och kedjan känner man knappt igen. Den tidigare prognosen om att Exiles skulle ha vunnit med lite marginal hade nog kvarstått efter dessa dråpslag.

Går vi till den andra matchen visste vi att Tim J. var avstängd och skotten Cameron King var tveksam. Och mycket riktigt saknades Kings namn. Dessutom saknades flankern Liam Ryderfeldt som haft en bra säsong hittills. Kedjan är svag men de har åtminstone Proos, Nylén och Fransson som ryggrad i backarna. Illavarslande är att de åker ned med fyra på bänken; en 19-åring och tre som är 31, 37 och 39 år gamla. Nykomlingarna i klungan kvarstår som något av en besvikelse och det känns som om Enköpingstruppen nu i helgen är bland de sämre på senare år.

Den slutgiltiga truppen från Pingvin bjöd också på en rad överraskningar. Andraledaren och inkastspecialisten Oscar Larsson var borta, han ersattes dock av återvändande Erik Sjöbeck. Men det hade skett en kraftig omstuvning av lagets många georgier. Bara en, den snabbe, ettrige yttern var borta men tre av de ordinarie hade flyttats till bänken och ersatts av andra georgier. Om detta var en följd av ett offentligt bråk mellan tränaren och en av de bättre georgierna i samband med förra veckans match vet jag inte. Men det får de reda ut själva.

Min tidigare prognos var att Pingvin skulle köra över Enköping i klungan och vinna lätt hade behövt modifieras något utifrån tecken på en Pingvinsk försvagning och viss oro i lägret. Men prognosen 4 – 5 poäng till Pingvin hade kvarstått.

Nåväl, nu har båda matcherna spelats och vi har facit på hand. Efter att ha tittat på båda två fick jag en känsla av att båda var något avslagna. Det hjälpte kanske inte Troján att flera spelare hade tre tuffa landskamper i bena innan Superserien startade. Mina prognoser slog in men matcherna var jämnare än jag hade trott. Utan tvekan spelade Troján bättre än beräknat. De pressade rätt mycket i början och Adam Kristersson som hade en bra match skapade ett fint första försök. Sami Paulsson som vi trodde var skadad hade en fin match som uthalv och Kalmargänget, med två försök av tre, lämnade som vanligt ett viktigt bidrag.

Exiles kom så småningom in i matchen men deras ledning 17 – 7 i halvtid avspeglade i viss mån Ushas förmäga att slå in sparkar från alla håll och kanter. Efter pausen var det Trojáns tur att utnyttja vinden, 5 – 0 i straffar, en briljant genomlöpning av fullbacken Setanta M. och en målspark från sidlinjen av Sami för att efter 50” leda med 21 – 20. Men då tog orken slut och Troján var aldrig mera inom Exiles 22m med bollen i hand. Exiles hade därefter ett visst övertag men kunde efter 60” bara notera 5 poäng till efter en bra kantlöpning av Dave Hill. Exiles pressade på slutet men en boll tappad över mållinjen innebar en 4 – 1 seger i stället för 5 – 0 till Exiles. Men jag tror inte att någon missunnade Troján sin poäng.  

Matchen i Trelleborg började också lite oväntat med hård press från Enköping som jag trodde skulle få problem. Pressen ledde visserligen till bara två straffar, Pingvin började ta över, ledde 17 – 6 efter en halvtimme, och såg ut att dra ifrån. Men Enköping samlade sig på nytt mot ett ganska svagt försvar och gick in till pausen med två försök och en 18 – 17 ledning.

Men även här tog orken slut och Pingvin kunde göra tre försök varav två från långt håll mot än en gång svagt försvar för att ta en ledning med 36 – 18 och en bonuspoäng. Enköping pressade på nytt de sista minuterna och Robin Fransson gick över i hörnet för att se det omvandlat till ett strafförsök. Intressant att notera att det var de svenska grabbarna som gjorde alla fem försök och inte som brukligt Pingvins georgier, som var färre och spelade en undanskymd roll.

Exiles har nu vunnit tre bortamatcher och leder med 13 poäng. Pingvin ligger en poäng efter med tre bonuspoäng och en förlust, Enköping har fortfarande 7 poäng och Troján hat fått sin första poäng. Ett litet glapp mellan de två ledande och de två övriga. Men nu får alla en månad för att hämta sig och att ta itu med de nio återstående omgångarna.    

Now it´s Enköping´s turn to take the long trip down to Skåne while Exiles go a quarter of the way, to Norrköping. After pushing themselves to their intellectual limits the SRF has finally got the correct points for the four “Superteams” after round 2: Exiles 9, Pingvin 7, Enköping 5 and Troján 0. I have a feeling round 3 will see the gap widening between the top two and the bottom two although I wouldn´t bet the house on this outcome.

I mentioned in my previous blog that all four teams are suffering from long-term injuries and that these could well contribute to this week´s results. A further complication is that one club could have as many as three suspensions for foul play in coming weeks.

With two bonus points last week, Pingvin lost the game to Exiles but are still only two points behind. That´s the whole point of the bonus system of course; a loss of 24 – 26 should be worth more than a loss of 0 – 26. Sadly, perhaps the worst injury last week befell flanker Nathaniel Cickovsky. He missed a tackle on the massive Exile Theo Karlsson and his jaw struck Theo´s heel. Result – a jaw broken in two places and almost certainly the end of his season. He has, I am sure, the best wishes of all Swedish rugby enthusiasts and the hope that it will not be too long before he is back to full capacity. We´ll see on Saturday how many others are having to take some time off, the first half in Trelleborg last week lasted exactly one hour, i e 20” for injury stoppages. The Pingvin team incidently, had seven Swedes, seven Giorgians and a New Zealander. They played not badly last week, but were outclassed in the first half by a free flowing Exile´s attack. Exiles had six fairly serious injuries by the second half and Pingvin came back strongly to almost reverse the result.

Enköping fielded a large pack in their first game but were pushed all over the field by Exiles. They weren´t much better in round 2 when a weakened Troján still seemed to have the edge in the set pieces. I think they will be mauled by the Pingvin pack on Saturday and will at best share the lineouts. The main problem for Enköping will be the backs. As the game drew to a close, Tim Johansson ran straight into a Troján player and floored him without any attempt at a tackle. Most unlike Tim, but without any doubt a red-card offense. He has now been banned, but only for the Pingvin game. Tim has been the key figure for Enköping and to some extent the national team this year and is irreplaceable for the club. Top player Cameron King went off in the second half of the first round and only came on for the last few minutes of round 2. He is obviously not quite 100% fit and this will also reduce Enköping´s scoring potential. Another problem down the line is that two further backs have been reported for stamping on an Exile´s player on the ground in round 1. This will be dealt with next week but, looking at the video, it could also lead to suspensions.

I don´t think Enköping will be able to stand up to Pingvin and their scoring potential will be greatly reduced by Tim´s absence. I think Pingvin will win, perhaps even with a bonus point.

Exiles play their third away game in a row, because of problems involving capacity at Gubbängen. To win this one as well would put them in the driver´s seat for an 11^th title in a row after a quarter of the games played, but there is of course a long way to go. Exiles lost six players to injury in last week´s match, some of them serious. Among others, Mak Jelec Dozo and Sean Burke both dislocated their shoulders, Glendon du Plessis tore a tendon in his knee and Thulani Gushman suffered a concussion. In addition Ian Gowland injured himself while training with the national 7s team last week. Unfortunately, Sean, perhaps Sweden´s best player in recent years, could be out for the season. Glendon has been operated this week while Sean got everything back in place and undamaged but it was a long, arduous task and he will need time to recover. The remaining four will be back by the Autumn. Exiles are, however, able to bring in five other internationals this week and at worst will only have a marginally weakened team. In fact, in some ways a stronger one.

A word of praise for some Exiles´ members. With two players in hospital overnight, it proved impossible to get any form of public transport, flight, rail, or rented car back from Skåne on Sunday at the end of the long holiday. So two of our fine Georgians, Levan and Uscha, took the train back to Stockholm on Saturday, then turned around and drove back to Skåne. They picked up the two injured and Anders Swärd who had spent the weekend rushing around hospitals drove all four back to Stockholm on the Sunday. I´m proud to belong to a club where players, supporters and committee members are prepared to work selflessly for other club members in an emergency.

For Troján, Sami Paulsson their international No 8 will I think be off a bit longer but I don´t know what the position is with their halvbacks. I feel a bit sorry for star winger Alex Melander who has to move around the backs to fill holes for Sweden and Troján. He is an out and out winger and should be given a chance to develop his skills there. I have mentioned before that Troján rely on a number of players from farmer club Kalmar Södra but I should point out that that does not weaken Troján´s team. Armir Kozhani, Niclas Crona and Adam C. are all knocking on the door for (further) international honours. I feel, however, that Troján´s traditional forwards have been running out of steam a bit, perhaps not quite so motivated when facing Old Father Time. They have been helped by the addition of jumper Christopher Sidgwick, but I think both Exiles´ and Pingvin´s packs are stronger and more dynamic.

This is an important game for both sides. A win will help Troján make contact with the other teams while a win for Exiles will confirm their status as leaders and favourites. Losses will mean a probable also ran role for Troján or a probable second place behind Pingvin for Exiles. If Exiles can play like they did in the first half against Pingvin I think they will win, with perhaps even another bonus point.

After this Saturday there will be a gap of five weeks until round 4 of the Superseries and then a further four weeks before round 5. This will then be the start of five grueling rounds in a row while the last three rounds will be played every other week. A ridiculous summer gap due once again to the gross incompetence of the SRF, who couldn´t organize a sevens tournament in a brewery. But at least it will help some of the players to recover from their various ailments.            

Ytterligare två hårda drabbningar och antalet skadade ökar. Innan Superserien startade var ett par klubbar oroliga för att deras trupper inte skulle klara 12 matcher mot hårt motstånd. De verkar få vatten på sin kvarn då, efter två omgångar, samtliga fyra klubbar har allvarliga skador bland nyckelpersoner. Låt oss hoppas att den negativa trenden inte fortsätter.

De två obesegrade lagen möttes i Trelleborg då Pingvin tog emot Exiles. Gästerna började med vinden bakom sig och utklassade Pingvin fullständigt under första halvlek. Huvudvapnet var Exiles tredje led där Pingvin hade inget svar mot nye kaptenen Theo Karlsson och de två flankers Glendon du Plessis och Sean Burke. Det blev 26 – 0 i halvtid och ingenting tydde på en comeback från hemmalaget. Men då hade båda flankers samt en pelare fått allvarliga skador och matchen svängde. Då var det Exiles som fick försvara sig och Pingvin började samla poäng. De låg fortfarande 14 poäng under då 5” återstod men hann nästan ikapp.

Klungorna var rätt jämna med kanske en liten fördel till Pingvin, men Exiles inkast var katastrofalt dåliga, jag tror att de förlorade tio egna. Delvis p g a att rutinerna hade störts av alla skador. Trots eländet har Exiles inkasserat 9 poäng från två bortamatcher och leder från Pingvin som fick en poäng för knapp förlust och en för fyra försök, vilket ger 7 poäng sammanlagt (efter en rättelse är tabellen fortfarande fel). De har ett fynd i Anton Petrowitsch, chilenare med svenskt påbrå.

Trojan verkar värst drabbade av skador och är kraftigt beroende av spelare från farmarklubben Kalmar Södra. De spelade dock en rätt bra match och förlorade med endast två försök mot noll. Enköping hade dock ett spelmässigt övertag och straffarna rullade in. Det blir således 5 poäng efter två omgångar, medan Troján med noll poäng börjar se sina mästerskapschanser rinna iväg.

Söderut ledde Lugi med 14 – 13 över Göteborg då 15” återstod, delvis tack vare två försök av landslagsman Ale Loman. Men Göteborg kunde till sist samla sig och dra ifrån till 32 – 14.

Kan inte hitta några tecken på att Malmö – Vänersborg spelades igår.

Norrut tog Erikslund emot Exiles B. Exilesklubben ställde upp med 44 spelare igår men B-gruppen hade av olika skäl försvagats ordentligt. De räckte inte till mot ett bra Erikslund som till sist vann 57 – 0.

Dags för andra omgången I Superserien efter knappa segrar för Exiles och Pingvin. Nu möts dessa i Trelleborg medan Enköping tar emot Trojan. Inget tyder på att det inte blir tuffa, jämna matcher även denna gång.  Sent på fredag eftermiddag har två  av lagen fortfarande inte redovisat sin trupp eller laguppställning. Exiles redovisade sitt lag i onsdags men har redan fått göra ett par ändringar. Deras lag är dock av samma styrka som förra veckan med samma stora klunga som dominerade mot Enköping.  Jag har redan noterat att Exiles hade en hög felfrekvens och påtagliga taktiska brister förra veckan. Har de lyckats reda ut dessa problem i veckan tror jag att de kommer att vara för starka för Pingvin. Men hemmalaget är ständigt på alerten i öppet spel och är inte Exiles på sin vakt kan de bli utmanövrerade. Det blir en spännande match.

Vi vet inte var Enköping står m a p spelare och skador; de hade ett antal som var illa däran efter matchen mot Exiles. King lämnade planen efter 55” och det vore en stor förlust om han fortfarande bär på en benskada. Ett par måste nog bytas ut ur klungan och deras bänk ser inte ut att vara alltför stark. De verkar dock ha det bättre ställt än Norrköping som saknar 4 – 5 spelare från det man hittills uppfattat som deras starkaste lag. Man känner igen klungan, men den kom klar tvåa efter Pingvin förra veckan. Enda trösten är att inte heller Enköping varit övertygande i det avseendet. Att sätta Armir Khozani på bänken är en klar felbedömning enligt min uppfattning. Jag anser att han för tillfället är Sveriges bäste kratsare. Det fattas flera spelare bland Troján´s backar och där han man fått stuva om ordentligt. Utan ordinarie halvbackar har Alex Melander fått träda in som uthalv och kedjan känner man knappt igen. Som helhet har Kalmar Södra 7 spelare i truppen, av vilka 4 startande. Detta är illavarslande, fast flera av dessa är bra spelare, och det säger en del om Trojáns spelardjup. Jag kan inte se annat än att Enköping vinner med viss marginal.   

På lägre nivå Söderut möts Göteborg och Lugi och Malmö tar emot Vänersborg. Endast Göteborg har inte förlorat stort i år. De bör slå Lugi medan de två återstående lagen får slåss om bottenplaceringar.

På Norra serien möts Erikslund och Exiles B i ett Stockholms derby. Hittills i år har båda slagit Hammarby. Det kan bli en rätt bra match men jag är osäker på hur starkt B-laget är. De slåss nämligen mot såväl Erikslund som Rugbyförbundet vars enda synliga insats för tillfället tycks vara att hindra unga Exiles grabbar från att spela någon match i Sverige innan de åker hem till fortsatta studier.

Damerna har nu en omgång i juli innan serien fortsätter mot slutet av augusti. De är nog glada att nu få tillfället att spela några tämligen meningslösa sjumanna matcher innan det blir SM-dags i juli.

After the national team being given free reign to concentrate upon international matters, the Super Series got off to a bang on Saturday. The hope that there would be tight games among the best teams every week was certainly confirmed in round one when Exiles got home by a single point against Enköping and Pingvin only just pulled away in the last few minutes from Troján.

The match in Enköping against Exiles was perhaps the most physical game I have ever seen between the two clubs, giving rise to fears that some of the Super clubs may have difficulty in surviving this intensity for the entire 12 games. Enköping had three players having to leave the field, Exiles one. Enköping attacked at pace from the start, spending a lot of time in Exiles´ 22. But all they had to show for it was 3 points against tremendous tackling. Exiles rode out the storm and forced their way over for a converted try to lead 7 – 3 at the break. Exiles began to take command in the second half but this time it was Enköping who took their chances. Tim succeeded with one of the new 50/22 kicks which gave Enköping the throw-in in the opposing 22. Exiles started strolling back but in the meantime Enköping were on the spot, took a quick line-out and strolled over to score unchallenged. The conversion gave them a lead of 10 – 7, but order was restored soon after. An attempt at a chip over the Exiles´ backs was charged down by Glendon du Plessis who then strolled in under the posts and it was back to 14 – 10 for the visitors. And worse was to come. A kick out of defense from Exiles saw Tim gather the ball on halfway. He floated the ball to the centre of the field but coming up the field like a steam-train was Dave Hill who plucked the ball out of the air and once again unchallenged touched down under the posts. At 21 – 10 and with about 15”to go it looked all over as Exiles pack got within a metre of the line two or three times, but carelessness and heroic defense kept them out. Then with 5” to go it was Enköping back on the attack, helped by Exiles´ backs who repeatedly threw the ball about when less than 10  metres from their own line  and often losing it. Finally, Enköping drove over but a hurried Hannes Nylén pulled his conversion and it was 21 – 15. With a couple of minutes to go it was Enköping back again and with the Exiles´ backs waving advice to each other about defensive positions, No 8 Apanavicius crept over in the corner. Could Nylén save the day with a last minute conversion from the sideline? He struck the ball beautifully but it hit the far post high up and dropped a yard or two in front of the crossbar. A minute later and it was all over with Exiles winning 21 – 20. Perhaps the toughest and most exciting game for many years between the two teams.

Enköping were hoping to have solved their front-row problems by importing a couple of young Dutch props. They may have to think again as their set scrum was comprehensively demolished from start to finish. They went back 2 – 5 metres on every single put-in, but with the ball going into the second row nowadays this is not as damaging as it used to be. Exiles had the edge in the lineouts as well, with Enköping struggling to get possession throughout. So how could Enköping stay in the game? Exiles made repeated handling errors in the rucks and mauls and Enköping were quick to snap up possession. With time to take clearance kicks in defense, Exiles repeatedly started passing moves a few metres from their own line and often lost the ball. This meant they almost lost a game which they should have won with a bit to spare. They will be happy to have won 4 – 1 in points but will have to improve their handling and tactical awareness if they are going to take their 11^th title in a row.

Enköping´s scrum and line-out will probably have the same problems against Pingvin and could struggle against Troján as well. Their backs looked good going forward and in defense, with Tim at stand-off having another excellent game, but their bench seemed fairly thin if they are to make it through the 12 rounds. I wasn´t too impressed by Nils Boyer´s handling of the match last year but I´m happy to applaud a much improved performance this time around.

The match in Norrköping was a less entertaining one with far too much stop-start around the scrums. With six starting Georgians, Pingvin started with a bang creating a gap for the wing-forward to crash over after three minutes. Troján gradually got their act together and new recruit from Hammarby, Christopher Sidgwick forced his way over for a 7-pointer. Troján were gradually getting the upper hand and Hall put over a couple of penalties to make it 13 – 5. Then it was Pingvin with territorial advantage and another powerful surge made it 13 – 12. Hall added another penalty, 16 – 12, and they went to the break with little between the two teams. Pingvin were gaining the upper hand in the scrums, however, and within 4” David Abashidze was over for another 7-pointer. Ten minutes later, Hall was in the sin-bin and his counterpart went over unchallenged. With less than 30” to go it was now Pingvin in the driving seat with a lead of one clear score, 24 – 16.

Troján kept fighting and Alex Melander scored a fine try after a chip through. But with a few minutes to go Bebiashvili had the final say when pressure created a final gap on the wing to make it 29 – 21.

In the final analysis Pingvin were probably just worth a win but they were facing a Troján side with a number of problems. Their coach, Anna-Lena Swartz, had to withdraw at a late stage and they were without two of the triumphant national team of the week before. Captain Sami Paulsson has a shoulder problem which may involve an operation and an extended absence and Mathieu Cossin has a pulled muscle. Trojáns bench did not seem the strongest but they solved this by bringing in five useful players from their farmer club, Kalmar Södra. I fear they may struggle a bit as the 12 rounds grind on.

Pingvin put on a decent display with a powerful pack and several strong runners in the backs. They never got complete control of the Troján pack although once they pushed them 20 metres back for a pushover try. Their pack is not very tall but heavy and the question is how they will fare next week against the giant Exiles´ pack most of whom are over 1m.90cm. and 110 kg. This could be an exciting summer. One supporter was unhappy that I mentioned the number of Georgians in Pingvin and that they run the show.  Well, they scored about 80% of Pingvin´s tries last season and 4 out of 5 last Saturday. I don´t think my comments were too far off the mark.

Let´s hope the only just functioning Union can let us know how many points each team has after the first round. Exiles have 4 and Enköping 1. Either you get a bonus point if you score at least four tries or the bonus point is only awarded if you score at least four but three more than the opposition. Pingvin scored 5 and Troján 3 tries, so it´s either 4 -0 or 5 – 0.

The ladies are now down to 8 teams with Berserkers dropping out. Uppsala have made a very poor start while newcomers Karlstad/Södertälje are also struggling. Skåne Ladies won a second home game comfortably against Exiles, but apparently it was a closer game than the 41 – 12 score suggests. Exiles have recruited a number of new, younger players and might find it hard going this season. Well done Hammarby who recorded one of their first  wins ever, against Uppsala.

In the lower male series, match of the day was the Gothenburg derby. This was not a bad game which could have gone either way. With a few minutes to go Göteborg missed a conversion in front of the posts to take a lead of 15 – 13, but Spartacus came back with a 7-pointer on the final whistle to win 20 – 13. May the close rivalry continue.

At Gubbängen I had expected Hammarby to present a challenge to Erikslund but the home team were in essence short-handed with two players walking around the field from start to finish. Erikslund started briskly with this 15 – 13 advantage and were 15 – 0 up in as many minutes. But it was still 25 – 7 up at the break with Hammarby benefiting from a defensive blunder. Hammarby regrouped at half-time and with the wind behind them their backs got on the move, but Erikslund stood firm. They got a score on the final whistle to make it 32 – 7 but were not terribly impressive in the second half. Both teams will get a chance to show what they are made of when Erikslund play Exiles B next weekend.

Exiles B played a 10-a-side friendly against Berserkers on Sunday to help them keep going. It was a very enjoyable 50” match with Exiles winning 51 – 33 and all in the very best spirit of the game. Well done both sides.

Finally, after giving the national team a free hand, the male league starts off in earnest. Enköping play Exiles at 3 pm, N.B. in Enköping, while Trojan receive Pingvin in Norrköping at 2 pm. The teams have been keeping their cards pretty close to their chests and it´s difficult at this stage to pick obvious winners.

Exiles are feeling pretty happy with their preparations, they´ve had over 70 players appearing at least once at training and there is usually over 40 at each session. Exiles will of course be fielding two teams, their B-team starting off by beating Hammarby 19 -10 last week. Coach Henry van Niekerk has moved up to team manager after winning five titles in a row and is also helping out with the national team. The new coach is another South African, Neill Erasmus, one of Sweden´s best players for many years. He has been assisted by Sean Burke, Ian Gowland and Paul Sutherland, all Exiles and Swedish stars with two still playing. And Hunter Jr, also an international top try scorer and Swedish coach of the year many years ago is in charge of the B-team.

Exiles have lost only one or two marginal players from last year and have added another Georgian prop who has been playing in Russia. In addition, the excellent Fijian-Danish back Christian Melgaard who works in Stockholm has moved to Exiles from Trojan. We have also about 15 new players who have just bobbed up, although one or two useful ones as a result of suggestions from current players. A few players will be missing this weekend, but Exiles will still have a good team including an enormous pack. Enköping have been advertising for players and have found a couple of young props from the Netherlands. This will strengthen a weakness from last year but it will be interesting to see how they fare against a couple of blue-jawed mature Georgians playing for Exiles. An American and a Latvian have also been added to the squad. Enköping did not badly in a 7-a-side tournament in Lithuania last week, winning two of their four games. Easily their best player was Cameron King, the Scot who made a valuable contribution to the Enköping attack last year. He will no doubt do the same again but his impressive Argentinian partner seems to be missing in 2022. And veterans Robin and Tim will no doubt still be playing a part.

Enköping have only beaten Exiles once in recent years and that was after a 15 – 0 penalty count against Exiles in the second half. I think Exiles will prove the stronger by the second half but I look forward to an exciting and close game.

I know even less about the other two teams in the Super Series so should be rather cautious about predictions. Trojan have been fielding nearly half the national team in their recent successful series, although why that has been the case has puzzled many outsiders. Their coach, Anna-Lena Swartz, has had to withdraw at the last minute because of other commitments and this will not have helped. Two of their international forwards have taken over the task. Christopher Sidgwick who has been studying abroad has decided to move from Hammarby to Troján, probably a wise move if he wishes to make a return to the national team. A former Exiles´ forward, Henning Engström, now studying at Linköping has also signed up for them. I don´t know how badly injured stand-off Mattieu Cossin was in the international last week but I imagine their other internationals will be out in force, including Sweden´s best striker, Alex Melander. They will be facing Pingvin who had no starters in the internationals and superficially Troján should win easily. It´s probably a bit more complicated than that. Pingvin have 5 -6 useful Georgians who ran the show last year and scored almost all their points. They have also just signed a useful English winger who may do some damage. There was in addition talk of other foreign players arriving. I expect another close game with Troján having the edge. This is, however, Pingvin´s 60^th anniversary, congratulations, and they wjll be planning for another outcome.

Nine teams in the Ladies championships with long-distance travel meaning that few away teams win. Last years winners, Skåne Ladies, a combination of 3 club sides ,look once again to be the pick of the bunch, with Göteborg, Exiles and Enköping in hot pursuit. Hardly a level playing field with a club combination involved, but if the other ladies are happy, who am I to complain?

Only a couple of games in  Div. 1 Allsvenskan, one in the North and one in the South-East. Hammarby put up a solid display last week but still lost 19 -10 to a powerful Exiles B team. Erikslund won the title at this level last year and have a couple of training wins under their belt. They are a farmer club to Enköping but how this could help I don´t know. Erikslund could just have the edge but Hammarby might well spring a surprise.

On Sunday we have the Gothenburg derby between Spartacus and Göteborg. There are hints that Spartacus could be pulling away from their arch-rivals. We´ll se if this is really the case on Sunday.

So, four male games and four ladies to entertain us in league matches. By our very modest standards a bumper weekend.

A few more thoughts on Saturday´s triumphal victory against the Czechs. I´ve already abjectly apologized for suggesting that the Czechs should win by 10 – 15 points but, in view of the outcome, I´m delighted to do so. The Czechs were not quite on their game, Sweden raised theirs and that was enough to reverse the outcome. The Czechs perhaps underestimated Sweden, eight of their squad were born in the 2000s as opposed to Sweden who had two. For the record, the Swedish team only had one “three-year” Swede, the flanker Terry Frixell. He is married to a Swede and has lived here for 6-7 years. Of the remaining four “foreigners” in the team three have Swedish mothers and one a Swedish grandmother.

Sweden had also corrected some of the flaws apparent in their narrow win over Hungary. A number of players whom I have been less impressed with also improved their performances. Well done to all concerned including the coach Alex Laybourne who has obviously played an important part. I thought Sweden would now have to face Croatia from the Southern group, but Rugby World maintains that Sweden goes straight up to the Trophy level, which no-one will be objecting to. Sweden now moves up to a ranking of 38, just behind Ukraine and Czechia and only four places away from our all-time high.

Next year we should be meeting the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Switzerland and possibly Ukraine, depending on external circumstances. These are countries we have beaten in the past or lost by narrow defeats. If we can raise our game one more notch we can be competitive against all these teams and that will be something to aim for in the Autumn.

Returning to Saturday´s game we had an impressive display from Ian Power of Stockholm Opera and Exiles who sang both national anthems, The young ball-boys and girls as well as flag-carriers were smartly turned out in Exiles´ kit and the streaming commentary was handled well by Exiles chairman Allan Mabon who with his brother Hamish has been covering rugby in Sweden for the last 5 years. Around 100 people  in Sweden paid the 49:- to watch the match live, but this is the first time payment has been required and the numbers will no doubt build up. As Allan and others say: “There´s no such thing as a free rugby game and viewers will have to accept making small payments in future”.

I am told that 1300 people bought tickets and with children and other freebies there must have been close to 2000 at the game. I don´t know all the financial details but I believe a substantial profit will have been made for the Union and for Stockholm rugby, the first time in living memory that this has ever been achieved. Congratulations to all concerned.

The main change for this final game was moving Alex Melander to the wing and bringing in reserve stand-off Hannes Nylén at full back. These moves were both a clear improvement.

The line-out was still a bit shaky but it was often cut to 3-4 players and short throws were used. One of these repeated the clever move from the Luxemburg game where a short ball was quickly passed to Theo who came charging through a gap created by the rest of the pack. A surprise was the appearance of Tim Johansson as a replacement on half-time for the injured stand-off. It was immediately apparent that his attacking strategy created problems for the Czechs and gave new openings for the Swedish backs. At 36 Tim is no long-term answer to the stand-off position but in the last few weeks he has had two excellent games .for Sweden.

With these vital international matches behind us it is time to move on to the league season. A few matches have already been played but it will take a couple more weeks before we get a clear picture of where the various clubs stand. On the male side there are 13 teams involved as I noted to a certain degree of astonishment a few weeks ago. The top four play each other four times in a straight 12-game season with no playoffs for the first time this century. The established bonus points system, one point for four tries etc, will also be applied for the first time in years. This means of course that every game is important as opposed to the playoff system where you only have to reach your peak in the last two or three games. It will be interesting to follow the course of this season where every match will be decisive. In addition there will be five teams in the South-West and four in the Stockholm area. The Berserkers were planning to take part as well but they couldn´t quite get a team together and 7 – 8 players chose to sign up with Hammarby instead. Exiles have been planning to have a genuine second team for some months under the guidance of Hunter Jr and with many out training they seem to have succeeded. Both teams were put to the test on Sunday when Exiles B met Hammarby at Gubbängen . And an excellent game it proved to be. Hammarby started shakily but improved as the game went on. Exiles had ten  different nationalities represented  and ten players turning out for Exiles for the first time. They had, however, been training hard together for some time and were in command from the start. They pressed hard for long periods and went 12 – 0 up before Hammarby rather against the run of play reduced to 12 – 5. In the second half Hammarby proved to have a very lively set of backs who created gaps several times with desperate defense keeping them out. The teams finally got a try apiece in the second half to give a final score of 19 – 10. This is probably Exiles B´s best team ever, but it has to be said that Hammarby were playing better than they had done the season before in the top division. With Uppsala and Erikslund still to start their season this could be a quite closely matched series with not a great deal among the teams.

I´ll have some comments later on in the week about the Super Allsvenskan as Exiles head for Enköping and Pingvin make one of many trips North to Trojan.

Inget kan göra mig gladare än att erkänna att jag hade fel i går då jag ansåg att Tjeckien torde vara 10 – 15 poäng bättre än det svenska landslaget. Detta efter att ha sett alla matcher hittills i serien då såväl Tjeckien som Sverige stod som obesegrade efter tre omgångar. Men det osannolika inträffade!. Tjeckien var inte dåliga men speciellt i andra halvlek var Sverige bättre. De presterade tre försök trots ett rött kort i 35:e minuten och två gula kort och vann till sist 28 – 18 med två försök av de vanliga misstänkta Alex Melander och Theo och en pushover där pelaren Pontus fick tag på bollen.

En entusiastisk publik på närmare 2000 njöt av ett evenemang som organiserats på ett fint sätt av Stockholms Rugbyförbund. Stämningen var genomgående god och det fanns många tillfällen att hälsa på gamla rugbybekanta.

Sverige vinner Norra serien och möter nu Croatien som vann Södra serien för att avgöra vem so flyttas upp till Trophynivå. Det skulle förvåna mycket om det inte blev Sverige. Detta var Sveriges bästa rugbydag på mycket länge. Jag återkommer då vi hunnit smälta dagens sensation.
